a look at the gallery

pence gallery, davis

This is the Pence Gallery where I had my show last month. I had wanted to go and draw the building properly for a while, as it’s a very interesting design, but usually the foliage hides it a bit (but I love January!). I started this on Tuesday lunchtime, and then finished it off last night at home. Canson watercolour paper with uniball vision micro pen and cotman watercolours.

Incidentally, if you missed the show, you can see all the drawings that were on display on this new page here: Pence Gallery Show December 2011. Hope you like it!

Sorry for the lack of sketchbloggery this past week; I have been quite busy, and quite tired! But to report on last Friday’s show (and in fact the exhibit in general) – what a success! So many people came, my voice was getting hoarse from all the talking. Thank you so much to everybody who stopped by, I really appreciate it, and I hope you enjoyed the event. I brought along a few sketchbooks for random people to flick through (I know, heart palpitations, but people were gentle), and quite a few of my drawings on exhibit have sold now too.

A post-show beer

Afterwards I needed a beer. Just the one, but a big one. Next day I went and chopped down a Christmas tree, and the day after that I went to see a show at Grace Cathedral in San Francisco, where everybody was walking around holding a drawing that I had done… Much more posting to be done, stay tuned!!!

tonight! come and see my drawings…

je pense, je pense, je pense

pence gallery on D street

The Pence Gallery on the right and Antiques Plus on the left, a view of D Street drawn one lunchtime a couple of weeks ago. That man really was hunched up like that working on his laptop. It seemed wrong to leave him out. Seemed a strange place to study, but who am I to talk, I hunch over my sketchbook around town all the time.

So I don’t know if I have mentioned it before, but this December I will be having a show upstairs at the Pence Gallery, exhibiting many of my recent urban sketches. I’ll publicize it a little more widely as it draws near but I have been busy drawing away, still one or two sketches left to do but I’m getting there. They’re all sketches of Davis, places locals will recognize. Like this one. Stay tuned!

pence gallery art auction 2011

arboretum bridge at pence gallery auction

Tomorrow (Saturday September 10) is the date of the Pence Gallery’s 2011 Art Auction, in which the work of about 140 artists is on display for sale in the auction. the silent auction has been going for the past couple of weeks, and I was finally able to get over there myself yesterday to check it out. There is some amazing work there! The silent auction is still on until 5pm on saturday, and then in the evening the live auction and gala event will take place, with local food, drink and music, as well of course as the art. Tickets are available on the Pence Gallery website.

The piece I have is above, called “Arboretum Bridge” because it is a bridge in the Arboretum, imaginitively enough. A very Davis piece. If you fancy bidding for it, why not head to the Pence?

(Incidentally, I have an upcoming show at the Pence this December…)
