there will be blood orange

san pellegrino blood orange

Oh man this stuff is good. I’ve  liked San Pellegrino orange drinks for a while now, since discovering cans of it at Zia’s deli in Davis, but this new flavour, blood orange, is the business. I found it at the Davis Co-Op. I feel like Dracula. I drew this in my new sketch/notebook, the Miquelrius ‘Lapin’ book – the cover is illustrated by Barcelona-based French illustrator and fellow Urban Sketcher (and top bloke) Lapin, and it goes with the Lapin pencil case I have, both bought at the UC Davis bookstore, where I also bought my Paul Wang (Singapore based artist and fellow Urban Sketcher and also a top bloke) Moleskine, which I’m using a lot as my ‘big ideas’ book. I’m having lots of big ideas lately, but all just in idea form. Must be all the blood orange.

deli vision

zia's deli, downtown davis

There is a great little Italian deli in downtown Davis that I can’t believe I’ve never sketched in before. It’s called Zia’s, on 3rd Street (ziasdeli.com), and I occasionally pop in here for a can of that lovely orange San Pellegrino. (now I’ve drawn them before!) It was a hot Saturday afternoon, I had been dropping off fliers for the sketchcrawl at various spots downtown, I was thirsty, and I sat in here and started sketching. They do great sandwiches (they’ve won the ‘best sandwich’ award in Davis), and have a nice selection of Italian biscuits and sweets. They were almost closing up, so when I was done I popped outside to do a quick sketch of the front. The owner of the deli pulled up in his car and commended me on my drawing, which was nice. I commended him on his deli, which is nice too.

forza soda!

To celebrate the 2010 World Cup, we are eating and drinking things from (or at least associated with) all (or at least many) of the countries involved (though how involved Australia were in their 4-0 drubbing by Germany I don’t know). Above: Italian Soda. We have also had Baguette and Boursin (France),  Burritos, Margaritas, Quesadillas (Mexico, but we don’t need a World Cup for all those!), and a bottle of Carlsberg Elephant (Denmark). England has been represented by that Trifle, of course, but I also had a can of Strongbow, and as for America, well we live there and I think we had McDonalds the other day. Many other world foods and drinks to check off the list (I’m particularly looking forward to the Swiss chocolate). The Italian soda though was very very good. I had another one today, while out sketching in Sacramento. It may be my new favourite drink on a hot day.

Tomorrow we’ll have South African curry, with a nice South African wine. I do love a curry. I just need to get some vuvuzelas to blast all through dinner, and it’ll be complete.
