these vagabond shoes

A short video from my sketching outing in New York City last month. Do not even dare sing Englishman in New York while watching it. I posted this on Urban Sketchers. Thought the world might like to see it. I suppose it’s technically a ‘Making Of…’ documentary. Reality TV, Fly on the Wall drama (or, as you will see, fly in the beer).

I love this post so much, both for the street scenes/ambiance and for the hints of your drawing process. Also it made me want a beer. Downside: I now have Sting singing “Englishman in New York” stuck in my head. :-)

I’m such a fan of your pen, ink and watercolour art. Although I’m new to art (I’ve been an IT geek all my life so far and am now exploring the other half of my brain), your art is something to aspire to. Where did you learn – was it from simply practising for years, did you go to art school, or have you have other formal training?

Enough of the ego massaging and time for a noob question. :) Do you pencil first, commit with ink and then watercolour? Or do you vary how you draw?

I LOVE this video! I’ve often admired your sketches and wondered if you use free hand or tools to make certain lines and textures. I love seeing the sketches unfold. Fantastic.

thank you! yes, i often use a very light pencil (2H) to do some guiding lines, especially if there is a lot of perspective to consider, unless i’m in a hurry in which case i don’t bother. I try not to do too much with the pencil though, easy to get carried away, and makes the sketch take longer.
I recommend looking at martha’s (trumpetvine travels) demo on sketching, gave me some good tips! http://www.trumpetvine.com/sketchblog/2007/09/20/sketching_demo/

Thanks for that. I’ll check it out, and the rest of Martha’s blog. Practising as a beginner is one thing, but practising with some idea of what to aim for is another. :)
